Warm wishes as service
turns 105

Volume 49, No. 3, March 9, 2006

The Minister Assisting the Minister for Defence, Bruce Billson, together with the Chief of Navy, VADM Russ Shalders, AO, CSC, RAN congratulated all members and ex-serving members of the RAN on the occasion of the service’s 105th anniversary on March 1.

“Navy has made a significant contribution to Australia’s war and peacetime history and that this outstanding service to Australia continues today with the overseas deployment of many Navy personnel,” Mr Billson said.

“The Royal Australian Navy has earned a deserved world class reputation for excellence, skill and bravery, which is being upheld by all who serve today whether in the Persian Gulf, in Australian waters or ashore.

‘We can take great pride in Navy’s successes over the past 105 years.’

“Families and friends also play a critical role in supporting our Navy members and I would like to pay tribute to them for their contribution to our Navy personnel serving abroad with such distinction.”

Meanwhile, VADM Shalders said the Navy had come a long way from its humble beginnings in 1901.
“We can take great pride in Navy’s successes over the past 105 years,” he said.

CN said March 1, 1901 was the day the Navy was created under Section 51 of the constitution with the states transferring their naval forces to the Government.

VADM Shalders said in a time of very high operational tempo the Navy team, which includes many civilian and commercial partners, is achieving all and much more than is asked of it.
