Tigra’s mini roar

Model: Holden Tigra
RRP $34,990
Engine: 1.8l
Power: 92kw at 6000rpm
Economy: 8L/100km

ONE might view Holden’s marketing ploy on their two-seater Tigra as politically incorrect but the reality is the Australian company is openly wooing the ladies with its cute drop-top. Holden predicts 95 per cent of buyers will be women.

And indeed during the seven days with the Tigra, a number of males were openly disparaging of the French-built body planted on a Barina floor pan.

For those without family commitments it is a very practical, fun car. When you feel like wind in the hair motoring, at the touch of a button the steel roof folds neatly into the boot with just enough extra space for weekend luggage.

It is a very easy car to manoeuvre in traffic and fit into that tight car parking spot.

Engine/gearbox
The engine is basically the 1.8 litre engine from the Astra. It pumps out 92kw which gives pedestrian rather than neck snapping performance.

Driving/comfort
The steering is well-weighted and although the Tigra doesn’t have the superb dynamics and road manners of say an MX-5, the road holding and comfort levels are good.

Safety
The four wheel disc brakes with ABS were more than adequate for the car’s performance. Driver/ passenger airbags, plus front side impact airbags and automatic front seat belt tensioners, form the primary safety package.

Goodies
A Blaupunkt sound system with MP3 function ensures the driver and passenger enjoy their favourite tracks.
