RANRU camps instrumental to rugby success

RANRU made history this year by winning both the men’s and women’s competitions at the Australian Services Rugby Carnival (ASRC).

Two development training camps were held prior to the 2005 season and were instrumental to RANRU (Royal Australian Navy Rugby Union) achieving the victories.

To continue on the success, the first of four development camps were conducted on the weekend of October 22 and 23 in Canberra. Thirty-five players of all levels of skill and fitness travelled from Cerberus and Sydney based ships and establishments to be involved in the weekend. This year, for the first time, the camp catered for both male and female players. This was very successful and will continue for all other camps.

The camps are primarily designed to develop and improve player’s skills and techniques and also offer opportunities for young and upcoming players to be identified by RANRU coaching staff and management.

RANRU Head Coach Geoff Stokes said that “this development training camp format is the way ahead for Navy rugby”.

“It is particularly important now, in the lead up to the 2006 season, if Navy is to be competitive against the RN, RNZN and RSAN in the upcoming tri-annual Commonwealth Navies Cup Competition being held in South Africa in October 2006,” Stokes said.
The remaining camp for 2005 will be held at HMAS Stirling on November 18-20. The

final camp in the series will be conducted in Sydney during February or March next year at a date TBC.

Point of contact for training camp information is LEUT Ty Douglas on telephone (02) 6268 8585 or email tyrone.douglas@defence.gov.au
