Exhibition
open
Naval Historical Society
As part of Victorias Navy Week celebrations, the Naval Historical
Society of Australia staged an exhibition of photographs and paintings
which highlight Navys involvement in WWII. The exhibition,
which opened late last month, in the Visitors Centre at The Shrine
of Remembrance, continues until November 25.
The images on display cover the range of world locations in which
the RAN participated, from the Russian convoys, to the surrender
in Tokyo Bay. Other Navy Week activities included a yacht race,
seafarers service at St Pauls cathedral and an open
day at HMAS Cerberus.
In addition, there were ship visits by HMAS Manoora, Yarra, Wallaroo,
Hawkesbury, Diamantina, Bandicoot and HMNZS Endeavour. Navy Week
activities are being held in major capital cities throughout the
country.
New
deal on subs
Singapore bound
Sweden and Singapore are believed to be close to concluding a
deal for the transfer of two Type A 17 Västergötland-class
submarines to the Republic of Singapore Navy (RSN).
Local media reports in Sweden suggest that Västergötland
and Hälsingland - to be retired early from the Royal Swedish
Navy (RSwN) as a result of cutbacks in submarine force levels
- will be transferred as part of a sales agreement valued at about
SEK1 billion (USD128 million).
The package is expected to include modernisation refits prior
to delivery incorporating the addition of a Stirling air-independent
propulsion (AIP) system.
