There was a tinge of sadness for HMAS Canberra and HMAS Wollongong at the conclusion of Exercise Bersama Lima.

The Australian task group taking part in the exercise included two FFGs (HMA Ships Canberra and Adelaide), two Fremantle Class Patrol Boats (HMA Ships Wollongong and Townsville), two MHCs (HMA Ships Gascoyne and Norman), the replenishment ship HMAS Westralia and an element of Clearance Diving Team Four.

While HMA Ships Adelaide and Westralia returned to FBW for a well deserved break, the remainder of the task group proceeded to Singapore for some rest and relaxation.

But there was the realisation that for Canberra and Wollongong, it was the last time they would participate in a major exercise or visit some of these ports.

HMAS Canberra decommissions on November 10 and HMAS Wollongong decommissions on January 23, 2006.

The final chapter to Exercise Bersama Lima was held in Kuantan, Malaysia where the closing ceremony was attended by the Maritime Commander Australia (RADM Davyd Thomas) and the Commanding Officers of the participating Australian ships.

It also provided an opportunity for CMDR Ray Leggatt as the Australian Commander Task Group to present a plaque to the Bersama Lima Exercise Director.

At the ceremony it was announced that the exercise next year would be known as Bersama Pudu.
