IMPRESSIVE: One of the contenders for the new Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) ships.

The Government recently approved stage one of the $2 billion project to provide the Navy with two Landing Helicopter Dock (LHD) class ships.

Australian ship builders will be invited to tender for either or both of two designs including the Spanish Navantia ship at about 27,000 tonnes or the French Armaris Mistral ship (pictured above) with additional troop carrying capability at about 22,000 tonnes. Either would be a highly resourced ship capable of transporting up to 1000 personnel and six helicopters.

It will also be able to transport up to 150 vehicles including the M1A1 Abrams tank.
