The Directorate of Sailors Career Management (DSCM) Darwin opened in June this year as part of Sea Change.

With the centre conducting 130 interviews to date, recent feedback on the standard of service it has provided has been very positive. The interviews conducted by the OIC, WO Gary Brogan, have shown that DSCM Darwin is making a valuable contribution to the career management process in the area.

DSCM Darwin now manages postings for approximately 400 members in the Darwin area, including those personnel serving at sea. It maintains very close liaison with Career Managers in Canberra, as well as at DSCM Fleet Base West (FBW).

Like DSCM FBW, DSCM Darwin provides information on a wide range of career issues such as transfer of category, how to become an officer, and overseas postings. WO Brogan is also available to provide career management interviews for visiting Cairns-based units until DSCM Cairns is established in 2006.

WO Brogan said effective two-way communication is the key and that honesty and being realistic in regard to posting options available, go a long way towards ensuring the best outcome for not just the member, but also the RAN.

Local career managers are working hard to ensure that effective two-way communication is taking place, further enhancing sailors’ ability to have input into their future.

Outcomes of career management interviews are loaded into the member’s details in PMKeyS, so that DSCM managers in Canberra and Darwin are all working on the same information.

Numerous Fremantle Class Patrol Boat (FCPB) COs have also utilised DSCM Darwin to ensure the best possible outcome for future postings of their crew members, as DSCM Darwin is heavily involved in the transition process from the FCPB to the Armidale Class Patrol Boat (ACPB). This process includes the closing down of FIMA Darwin, and the ‘standing to’ of the Coonawarra Fleet Support and ACPB Technical Training Detachment positions.

  • To arrange an interview through your Divisional Officer, call AB Blake on (08) 8935 5957 or fax your request to (08) 8935 5524. Please include your return contact details on the fax. DSCM Darwin is located on the ground floor of the administration building at HMAS Coonawarra.
