More than 350 sports people converged on HMAS Stirling last month to battle it out in the annual FBW SPORTEX 2. Deck hockey, badminton, softball, volleyball, touch and tug-O-war were the sports in question, with the first sport deck hockey.

The winning team, the HMAS Arunta Ducks, emerged triumphant, and were all but unstoppable with their excellent puck control, strong and wellorganised game plan.

Badminton followed on Tuesday with 12 teams participating in a “Hopman Cup” format of two singles matches and a doubles match. The competition had that international flavour with the NZ Navy from the Anzac SPO trying to cause an upset on the day, belting the shuttlecock over the net.

The HMAS Anzac team eventually came up victorious, after only losing one tightly contested singles match all day. While the badminton war was in full swing, seven teams were playing softball on the FBW Sports Pavilion Oval.

All teams played exceptionally well, however, the HMAS Canberra “Brumby Jacks” took the title. Special mention must be made of ABBM Borlase who wore his “Grandpa Shoes”.

On day three, the volleyball began with 10 teams setting and spiking their way to immortality. It was a great day, everyone played well but all were beaten by AUSCDTFOUR who exhibited sound skills combined with excellent teamwork. The final day of SPORTEX 2 was started by touch.

Seven teams competed but it was AUSCDTFOUR who proved unstoppable after winning all their matches. They retained the touch trophy for another year. The day was finished with a tug of war between AUSCDTFOUR and HMAS Arunta. The Divers were the better tuggers on the day, but Arunta still walked away with an overall victory for SPORTEX 2 making them “the best sports ship in the west”.

PT Staff would like to thank all personnel that participated and assisted in making the event another success. Be on the lookout for SPORTEX 01/06.
