Explosive
ordnance training in the ADF has been standardised with the
opening of the Defence Explosive Ordnance Training School (DOETS)
at Orchard Hills, west of Sydney.
Combining the training functions previously performed by the
Air Force School of Technical Trades and the Joint Logistics
Command Explosive Ordnance Training Centre, the new school will
train avionics technicians from the three Services, as well
as Air Force explosive ordnance and improvised explosive device
disposal operators, and engineering and logistics staff from
the Defence Materiel Organisation and Joint Logistics Command.
The school was formed as part of the Defence Explosive Ordnance
Training Rationalisation Project.
Project leader WGCDR Graeme Davies said the school would be
an important part of meeting the aims of the project.
“The main goals of the project are to develop common explosive
ordnance curriculum for military and [civilian] staff throughout
Defence,” he said. “Doing so will make for a more effective
operational support capability.”
DOETS Commanding Officer SQNLDR Vern Carmody said the school
would train about 150 ADF personnel and Defence civilians every
year. “Training ranges from three-day introductory courses to
13-week specialist engineering courses and specialised operational
courses,” he said.
“Formation of DOETS is an exciting step closer to more effective
and efficient explosive ordnance training for uniformed and
civilian personnel within Defence.”
The school is staffed by Air Force and civilian instructors,
with parttime participation by Navy and Army training developers.
