A member of the Royal Australian Navy’s Sea Training Group has
won the prestigious Instructor of the Year award in the “on
the job training” category.
WOMT Robert Lee won the award and was presented with a certificate
of appreciation by the Director General for Navy Personnel and
Training CDRE Matt Tripovich at the TU-ASSC facility FBW, at
HMAS Stirling, Perth.
“A good instructor is long remembered and WO Lee’s dedication,
enthusiasm, versatility and professionalism while serving as
a member of the Sea Training Group has ensured the Anzac class
sailors have received the best possible training during work-up
periods,” CDRE Tripovich said.
WO Lee’s teaching typified the essential and invaluable guidance
that Sea Training Group provides to a ship’s company in its
work up to unit and mission readiness.
The presence of the Sea Training Group onboard ship marks a
critical phase in which the ship’s company in their various
capacities are tested and challenged to be able to meet a range
of unexpected scenarios.
During work-up, each member has to respond in a way which contributes
to the ship’s overall fighting and surviving ability.
The Sea Training Group oversees the crew’s performance and together
with the Commanding Officer and the Command Team, prepares the
ship for its subsequent operations.
WO Lee was very positive about winning the award. “My enjoyment
in the job stems from the love of teaching and satisfaction
of instructing Navy personnel and seeing the results,” he said.
“That’s the real reward … the investment in time and energy
pays excellent rewards when you see a newlyqualified person
acting with confidence.
“My approach is to get to know each trainee first, before trying
to impart knowledge … then I can gauge their individual readiness.
“I see what works and tailor the training accordingly, while
making it fun at the same time.”
