Never
mind what’s happening on the cricket field with Ricky Ponting
and his touring band of Aussie cricketers.
The real battle for the ‘Ashes’ was held recently between the
Australian Navy and a Royal Navy select team at Burnaby Road,
HMS Temeraire.
The 30-over game was played in glorious sunshine and the cricket
was just as sparkling.
The Royal Navy were put into bat after HMAS Anzac’s team captain,
LSSTD Pete Milton, won the toss.
Although the Royal Navy team made a steady start, soon the wickets
began to tumble and the team finished its innings 114 all out.
The Australians looked as if they were going to get beaten after
three quick wickets fell.
But led by LSSN Brokate (53 runs) and AB Lewis, who smashed
three successive balls for four near the end of the innings,
the Aussies cruised past the total with 13 overs to spare and
five wickets in hand. ABSTD Lyndon Ballard was the best of the
Australian bowlers with 3-9 and a run-out to his credit.
Just like the original Ashes legend, the ashes of the bails
were presented to the winning team as a trophy.
The ashes were sealed in a pewter urn and now reside onboard
HMAS Anzac.
Navy and Ricky Ponting’s team are not the only Aussie cricket
sides causing havoc in England. The ADF’s representative team
begins a four-week tour from July 14.
The side, which contains six Navy players, will play 11 games
on its tour including matches against the British Army, RN,
RAF and a Combined Services side.
