Navy has stretched its unbeaten run in the WA Interservice Netball
championships to 12 years.
Despite the size of the RAAF team and the skill of the Army
team, it was Navy that again came away with the trophy.
It was a cold day in June when the teams assembled at the HMAS
Stirling gymnasium.
The first quarter of the Army v Navy game was an erratic affair
with some glimpses of the brilliance to come from both teams.
In the second quarter, the Navy displayed good skill and communication
and pushed ahead to go into the half-time break with a five
goal lead.
In the third quarter the Army came out with revitalised enthusiasm
and quickly reduced the deficit until scores were level. Scores
remained close for the rest of the game with the Navy making
small breaks, having them closed down shortly afterwards.
Even with two minutes remaining, the result could have gone
either way. Only an inspired final minute saw the Navy break
away to a three goal lead which the Army were unable to peg
back.
The second game between Army and RAAF, resulted in the Army
winning convincingly 44-16.
With the competition still alive, the third game commenced between
Navy and RAAF.
Navy was clearly the better team and held solid leads at each
change of end.
The final score saw Navy defeat RAAF 46-22.
