Civil Schooling Scheme - case study

For those people thinking about studying there’s still time to get your applications in for the Civil Schooling Scheme (CSS) in 2006, the Defence Assisted Study Schemes (DASS) and post graduate study through the Australian Defence Force Academy (ADFA) campus of NSW.

All full-time serving Defence members will be considered for study assistance including release from work for study and/or financial support.

The success of your application will rely heavily on the relevance of your chosen professional or vocational development to the ADF.

Financially assisted study schemes are an attractive way of helping each member realise their personal educational or career development goals, while simultaneously satisfying Navy’s employment training requirements according to LEUT Jenny Weaver - Staff Officer Education at Navy Personnel and Training Centre Canberra.

The Civil Schooling Scheme is available on both a full and part-time basis. Full-time CSS allows sailors or officers to undertake civilian courses each year with a maximum funding of $15,000 per member.

There are 10 places annually with applications closing 30 June 30 this year.

There are 60 places available in the CSS on a part/own time basis with funding of up to $5,000 per individual - applications are due August 1, 2005. A return of service obligation (ROSO) will only apply to members approved to undertake CSS on a full time basis iaw DI(N) PERS 42-9.

The Defence Assisted Study Scheme aims to encourage members to consider education and professional development throughout their careers by supporting courses/studies which relate to current or likely future ADF employment.

There are three levels of support available. Level 1 with a yearly reimbursement of $4,000 for an individual who takes up an ADF preferred course or training with a career development focus.

Level 2 with sponsorship up to $2,000 for members undertaking courses relevant to Defence requirements and or employment in a career stream or trade. Applications for Levels 1 & 2 for 2006 studies are due by November 1, 2005.

Level 3 is designed for short vocational education and training courses in your line of work or as a stepping stone to a new career within Defence. Level 3 applications may be submitted at any time prior to commencement of the course giving NPTC-C at least 2 weeks notice for processing.

The ADFA post-graduate scheme provides a “no strings attached” benefit - with no return of service obligation. There are 200 full-time equivalent places across Defence, which in real terms equates to 600 actual part-time places, per semester at the ADFA campus and its available to all permanent members including Reserve Force members undertaking CFTS.

Members interested in applying for either CSS or DASS, should initially refer to DI(N) PERS 20-4 for CSS or DI(N) Pers 20-5 (paying particular note to the Operating Guidelines) for DASS.

Civil schooling Scheme - Case study

A seagoing LSMT sailor is interested in furthering her educational qualifications in line with her category.

She successfully submits her DASS application to undertake distance learning undergraduate studies in an Advanced Diploma of Mechanical Engineering at the Queensland University of Technology.

On commencement of her studies, the sailor applies for recognition of prior learning due to the studies she has undertaken in the RAN and this significantly reduces her workload.

The sailor completes her studies in two years receiving her advance diploma. The sailor now applies to articulate her studies to a Bachelor of Engineering and has approved CSS to complete her studies on an own-time basis.

On completion of her bachelors degree, she will be able to apply through NPTC-C to articulate her studies to a Masters Degree through ADFA at no expense to the member.
