Navy sports in good hands
By
LEUT Peter Teichmann
The Navy Sports Council, which was established in 2003, is particularly
active in satisfying the Chief of Navy’s commitment to boost participation
in sport within the service.
LEUT Peter Teichmann, the NSC business and resource manager said
the Navy Sports Council, which is chaired by CDRE Kevin Taylor,
has as its members, Commanding Officers of a number of shore establishments
around Australia and representatives from MHQ, the Australian
Defence Force Sports Council and the RAN Central Canteens Board
(RANCCB).
The RANCCB presently provides all of the money required to fund
Navy sport and is integral to the success of the NSC in achieving
its aim of boosting sport in the Navy.
LEUT Peter Teichmann was recently appointed as the Resource Business
Manager and Secretary of the NSC. He is also responsible for working
with Navy’s senior Physical Trainers to assist the sporting bodies
of approved sports to maximise participation in their respective
sports.
This coordinated approach to sport has resulted in the Sportex
periods on the West and East coasts.
Other opportunities for a Sportex in the North are being investigated.
The sports currently approved for funding and compensation purposes
include Australian Football, Basketball, Bowls, Cricket, Dragon
Boating, Golf,Hockey, Netball, Rugby League, Ruby Union, Sailing,
Alpine Snow Sports, Nordic Skiing, Running/Athletics, Shooting,
Soccer, Softball, Squash, Ten Pin Bowls, Touch Football, Triathlon,
Volleyball, Water Polo and Water Skiing (currently awaiting approval).
The Navy Policy on Sport is articulated in DI(N) PERS 70-7.
This document is being rewritten to reflect the creation of the
NSC and other initiatives undertaken by the council to reinvigorate
sport in the Navy.
