Cleaning day

More than 50 sailors from HMAS Coonawarra recently scoured Mindil and Vesteys Beaches for ‘Clean Up Australia Day’.

Armed only with shovels and gloves, the sailors attacked the waste with enthusiasm -bringing their own truck to carry the larger items.

Coonawarra’s Commanding Officer, CMDR Mark Hill said “Last year we needed the truck, but it would be nice to think it won’t be quite as full this year.

“This has become an annual event for us. We chose the beach because it’s close to the sea - the Navy’s work environment, and we are keen to keep it clean.

“The Navy is proud of its commitment to safeguarding the sea and our work on the foreshore is merely an extension of that commitment,” he said.
