When ABMED David Harris “went for the doctor” to scoop up a dropped
“hospital pass” and then sprint 75 metres for a solo try it meant
that the Systems Command’s top Rugby side had the Lord Denman
Cup in its keeping.
The try and subsequent conversion took the score to 21 with Maritime
Command’s side still on 15. With just minutes left on the clock
this was the final result.
It reversed the score of the inaugural challenge cup of April
2004 when Maritime Command defeated Systems Command 25-21.
The Lord Denman Cup was just one of three cups sought in a day
of football challenges held at the Randwick
Barracks
on Friday, March 11.
For
the first time the top AFL sides from Maritime and Systems Commands
battled
it out for the Victoria League (Jamie McGinley) Cup.

The football at Randwick was the final event of a week of sport
in the Sydney region.
It was part of Sportex 05, a program introduced in 2004 as a way
of improving health and fitness in the RAN. Sportex 05 was also
conducted in Western Australia commencing March 14.
More than 500 people joined by the Chief of Navy, VADM Chris Ritchie
and the respective commanders, RADM Rowan Moffitt (Maritime Commander)
and CDRE Geoff Geraghty (Systems Commander) watched 240 footballers
go through their paces at Randwick.
As the Maritime Commander said after the Rugby final, “the winner
here is Navy rugby”.
A number of representative sides were selected from the Randwick
games.

The
Minichiellos are well known for playing top Rugby League in Sydney.
Now a cousin is making a name for himself.
Joel Minichiello, however, is playing with a slightly smaller
oval ball.
“Because I come from Melbourne I’m playing Australian Rules,”
Joel said.
Joel, 25 is a seaman under training.
Last week he took part in the Victoria Cup Maritime Command/ Systems
Command challenge at Randwick and was awarded “best and fairest.”
For his efforts he received the Darren Murray Medal.
