QUICK STUDY: A class uses the new Mine Hunting Simulator System, which has successfully completed formal testing.

By LCDR Mick Gallagher & Mark Linden, MWCSS

The Mine Warfare Command Support System (MWCSS), has announced the successful completion of formal testing of a new Mine Hunting Simulator System (MHSS).

Project SEA 1297 saw the final release of MHSS developed by Cirrus Real Time Processing Systems (Cirrus) and introduces a simulation of the Mine Hunter Coastal (MHC) ships’ tactical data management and its interaction with the mine hunting sonar.

The MHSS emulates tactical and sonar displays and provides a high fidelity simulation of the underwater acoustic environment and sonar image formation process.

“This contract has been characterised by a very close cooperation with our Defence customers throughout,” Managing Director of Cirrus Peter Freed said.

The final release considerably broadens the training conducted by the RAN’s Mine Warfare Faculty at HMAS Waterhen and includes command and team training for the mine hunting task.

Search and classification sonar operators are stationed at separate consoles, supervised by a mine hunting director in real time.

“The MHSS project completion within budget and schedule, highlights the considerable capabilities residing within Australian Small to Medium Enterprise (SMEs),” Project Director MWCSS Mark Linden said.

Formal acceptance of the MHSS will be completed this year.
