It was a special cricket match indeed when the OPSO’s XI took
on the CDO’s XI at Albatross late last year.
The match, held on Appels Cricket Day, was played in memory of
LSEWL Phillip “Appels” Appelbee, a sailor who tragically collapsed
playing a game of cricket while serving at RANTEWSS at Albatross
in 1999.
He was rushed to Wollongong Hospital and was moved to Royal Perth
Hospital to be closer to his family but Phil passed away in November
2000.
It is in his honour that RANTEWSS continues to contest the game.
And so it was with enormous pride that the CO of RANTEWSS LCDR
Warwick Potter played host to Barry and Kay Appelbee, Appels’
parents, who made the journey across the Nullabor to be present
at the game for the first time.
The CO commenced proceedings by calling on Kay Appelbee to toss
the coin.
The CDO, LEUT Darren Nasato, won the toss and elected to field,
a wise choice on the day.
The OPSO’s XI batted admirably however, playing under indoor cricket
rules that saw minus five runs for an out, they could only manage
a total of 13 runs.
A seemingly paltry total for the CDO’s side to chase. As it turned
out, the run chase was more of a gallop and at the completion
of the final over, the CDO’s team had reached 107 runs to win
the competition.
Stand out players for the OPSO’s team were Mr Benny Goodman with
his unorthodox wrist spin, CPOEWL Tanja Dusseldorp with her perfect
ability of finding shade and a seat anywhere, LSEWL Mark Kostrzewa
with his usual sprightliness and ABEWL Simone Spano performing
the speccy catch of the day.
For the CDO’s team, Ms Liana Christlo with her pace bowling, LSEWT
Sue Lehmann with her ungainly bowling action, LSPHOT Brad Fullerton
with his massive sixes and POEWT Jason Schulze with his express
deliveries all made significant contributions to their team’s
impressive win.
A
big thank you to Barry and Kay Appelbee who attended the match
this year.
It was an honour to host the Appelbees at Albatross.
