Almost 200 competitors pounded the pavement at HMAS Harman last
month during the 40th Bonshaw Cup.
The 6.4km race was divided into two events, a walking and a running
race.
First Navy runner home was SMNCSO Ritchie, who finished third
overall in 24 minutes four seconds.
In the walking event, WO Wendy Ross was the first Navy competitor
across the line in a time of 40 minutes 42 seconds.
But it was the spirit of CMDR John Rousseau which captured the
event.
Less than one kilometre into the event, Rousseau hurt his ankle
and required treatment at the sick bay.
He later returned to the field, finish-ing last but with head
held high.
Overall winner in the run was Mr Luke Gratton from RAAFHQ in 21
min-utes 23 seconds, leading the field for the entire distance.
Mr Gratton had not competed in a long distance run since injuring
his foot at the Arafura Games in 2003.
Mr Darren Moore finished second with a time of 23 minutes 56 seconds.
Winners of the walk were Team Digo Walkers, Ms Lisa Wilson (36
minutes 20 seconds) and Mr “Blue” Worral (38 minutes
34 seconds), who finished first and second respectively.
The Bonshaw Cup, established in 1963, is the second oldest run
in the ACT.
The November event attracted teams from the Canberra area as well
as teams from HMAS Huon, Albatross, Melbourne, NISC, RAAF and
Army.
