Wheeling
out On behalf of all the 50-plus Defence members who competed
in this year’s Mont 24-hour Mountain Bike Race and were camped
in area at Kowen Forest reserved for Defence, we would like to
offer a hearty thank you to CDRE Russ Baker for his help and assistance
before and during the race.
Thanks to CDRE Baker, a total of eight Defence teams with representatives
from all three Services were given the ability to join together
in a single location not far from the transition area, food stalls
and corporate display tents.
CDRE Baker is a key member of Canberra Off Road Cyclists, the
club responsible for organising Australia’s largest mountain bike
race, and not only did CDRE Baker and his family help with the
event running, but he also developed the software to support to
the race.
His administrative, registration, timing and results software
caters for mountain biking, Triathlon and similar sports in many
parts of Australia and is the shining light for any well run and
organised race.
The PTI’s from HMAS Creswell, led by CPOPT Darren Dyball, must
also be thanked for the all bacon and egg burgers provided on
a 24- hour basis.
A fantastic weekend was had by all with some really quick times
posted over the 19km course.
There were a wide variety of Defence riders from triathletes,
road cyclists, PTI’s and social riders through to experienced
MTB devotees.
Hopefully, the large Defence contingent from all over Australia
will be back for next year’s Mont 24-hour. In the meantime, the
inaugural Defence MTB Cross Country Championships will be held
next year, so keep up the training.

Interest
in Fairmiles
I was apprenticed at Green Point Naval Boatyard in the 1940s and
can’t seem to find much accurate imformation on these vessels
[Fairmiles].
I was so taken up with them that I went to sea, travelling to
England and sailing on liners mostly.
Complete Fairmiles were built at Green Point and they created
world records completing vessels at one per fortnight from keel
to commisioned.
I remember heaps of info on them including people working there
including my father, who was a shipwright.
I also remember their armaments etc.
Any ongoing contact would be appreciated.

Lost
medals returned
For
the last four years I have been returning lost medals to veterans
or their next of kin.
To date I have returned almost 100 medals and I do this free of
any charge.
I have recently been asked to locate the family of 14055 LDG Cook
Henry Frederick Lee so that I can return his medals.
The
group consists of the 39-45 Star, Atlantic Star, Pacific Star
with MID, Defence Medal, War Medal, Australian Service Medal.
Lee was born in Gormanston Tasmania and his next of kin is listed
as his wife Irene.
The medals were sent to me from Queensland.
If any reader has information on this veteran I would appreciate
them contacting me on (02) 6255 0226,
via e-mail at llanwarne80@hotmail.com
or via the DRN.
