Sailors
from the west have been holding their own on the basketball court,
convincingly defeating the Singapore Navy team and holding a strong
Air Force side back from victory in the interservice competition.
Two weeks before, sailors from HMAS Stirling thrashed the Singaporeans
94-26, Navy came back from a disheartening first-game loss in
the WA Interservice Basketball Competition to defeat Air Force
and lock the tournament in a three-way draw.
Last year Navy dominated the competition, but a strong showing
from Air Force and Army guaranteed a tough contest.
Army and Air Force played it out in the first game, with Air Force
taking a stranglehold on the game early, but becoming complacent
in the second half and barely hanging on to win the game by three
points.
The loss left Army to play Navy in the second game. Fatigue should
have played into the hands of the Navy side, but against all odds
the Army dominated, hardly missing a shot to win the game 45-28.
Air Force was tipped to win the final match, only needing to beat
the Navy to secure the trophy.
The Navy players seemed to have their groove back and led early
on by a couple of baskets.
Fancy passing by ABCIS Marlon Perez and strong defence by SMNMT
Chad Francis helped Navy increase its lead into double figures.
Air Force tried to up the intensity but to no avail - Navy continued
to press hard and finished the game convincing winners 52- 34,
ending the WA competition in a three-way draw for the first time
in the history of the WA Interservice tournament.
