Quick
goals and a strong attack took Navy to a fourth consecutive title
in the WA Interservice Soccer last month at HMAS Stirling.
In near perfect conditions, Navy took on RAAF in game one.
The first half proved to be an even contest with the scores locked
at 2-all at the break.
Navy scored early in the second half and RAAF never really recovered.
Navy put the ball in the back of the net three times in the second
half to win 5-2.
The standout player for the match was LSBM Morgan Fielding who
scored a hat trick.
On day two, Army played RAAF in testing conditions with weather
hampering play.
With the aid of a strong wind Army led at half time 3-0 but RAAF
were confident the wind would help them in the second half.
When Army came out early and scored against the breeze, RAAF were
in trouble.
Despite repeated attempts, RAAF could only score twice while the
attack from Army was relentless.
Army eventually ran away with the win, 6-2.
Day three of the competition saw Navy play Army for the interservice
title. Navy scored a couple of times early in the first half and
took a stranglehold on the match.
However, two quick consecutive goals by Army saw the game back
in the balance at 3-2.
Navy then scored just before half time to breathe a little easier
during the break with the score at 4-2.
In the second half Navy came out strong and scored twice to leave
Army wondering what had happened.
The lead of 6-2 proved too great a hurdle for Army to overcome,
and although they managed to add one more to their score, Navy
answered with three more.
The final score of 9-3 saw Navy retain the title for the fourth
consecutive year.
Army, although in the finals for the first time in many years,
have not won the competition since 1983 and Navy ensured they
were not about to break the drought.
Best on ground was veteran CPO Vaughn Heath, who went out with
a bang scoring four goals in his last interservice appearance.
