It was smiles all round as 816SQN members flew Tiger 875, an RAN Seahawk into the MCG on AFL Grand Final day.

With special guests Peter Helliar and Sam Lee from the television show ‘Before the Game’ onboard, Tiger 875 flew to the hallowed turf to deliver the AFL Premiership Cup and match balls to the umpires.

Earlier in the day, the Seahawk lifted off from Victoria Barracks on St Kilda Road with their guests.

Peter and Sam both had firm grips on the AFL Premiership Cup as Tiger 875 did several flybys of the MCG, before being skilfully manoeuvred between the light towers and onto the centre of the playing field by Aircraft Captain, LEUT William Veale.

Once the helicopter had landed in the middle of the ground, POATV Darren Gration and ABATV Brent Commane stepped out onto the turf, carrying the match balls.

They then escorted Peter and Sam, who were carrying the Premiership Cup, out of the rotor arc and onto the centre wing area of the oval until Tiger 875 had departed the MCG.

In front of the large crowd, both sailors marched with the TV personalities towards the umpires who were awaiting the arrival of the match balls and Cup.

816 SQN’s XO, LCDR Shane Craig, who was the Tacco in Tiger 875 on Grand Final Day said, “Flying into the MCG on Grand Final Day is a great opportunity to gain fantastic publicity for the RAN.”
