Jordan
Dank showed why he holds the NSW Interservice Shortboard Surfriding
crown when took to the water this month with an impressive display
in the first
Navy Surf Association competition for the season.
Twenty-one competitors faced a rising 1-1.5 metre swell at Eloura
Beach, with Danks and the NSW Interservice Longboard runner-up,
Allan Brown, putting out the challenge.
The first competitors hit the water at 10am for 20-minute heats.
The conditions were not all they seemed and the waves a little
tricky to get into.
Jordan Dickinson set the pace early and held off Azz Ibbits to
take out the first heat.
With the tricky conditions noted, Adam Cross and Andrew Thomas
from HMAS Gascoyne exploited the situation in the second heat
to show their skill.
Thomas then edged out Cross with a 1 count from the judges.
The longboarders were next off the sand and Allan Brown showed
no respect for his compatriots with a fine display of turns and
carves.
The others had their work cut out for them and while Benn Dawson
pushed, Terry Oxley was feeling the effects of his recent shoulder
reconstruction and just enjoyed the workout to ensure he surfed
another day.
Heat two of the longboards saw Kyle Unicomb showing his prowess
in the water to lead all the way from Smiley McPherson, Russ Dawson
and Andrew Forde.
The final heat of the first round saw the boys from HMAS Albatross
hit the water.
Daniel Williamson and Jordan Dank were the ones to beat in this
heat with both surfers laying down repertoire of manoeuvres, thoroughly
entertaining the judges and the other club members.
Round two commenced with wave conditions crumbling.
Allan Brown, Kyle Unicomb and Benn Dawson took the heats respectively.
The Thirds and Fourths was a closely fought affair with Marcus
Westnedge, Liam Mather and Luke Heckenberg picking up the points.
Daisy May was up against it, and while youth took the advantage,
he staved off the challenges of Jason King and Ash Strong to take
the round.
The Seconds was also interesting with all surfers showing good
form and skill levels, but it was Daniel Williamson who edged
out Adam Cross and Azz Ibbetts for the win.
The final heat of the day, the Firsts, was a fiery battle between
Jordan Dank and Jordan Dickinson.
They put on an entertaining display the spectators, with Dank
maintaining winning form. Dickinson finished second with Andrew
Thomas taking third.
The next contest for the Navy Surf Association is scheduled for
October 6 at Shellharbour main beach.
Kick off time is 10am with transport planned to leave from outside
the FBE Gym at 6.30am, returning approximately 3pm.
