Navy came up victorious from the recent ACT Interservice Netball competition after comprehensive wins against Army and last year’s champions, RAAF.

The competition was held at the ACT Netball Centre on August 20 with each service fielding a men’s, women’s and mixed side to determine the overall champions.

Navy set a high standard early on, with the men’s side winning comfortably against RAAF 28-16 and the women’s team holding off a determined RAAF fight back to win by one point 22-21.

The situation became more interesting when the Navy mixed team was beaten by RAAF mixed (18-16).

This left Navy needing to win one of the remaining men’s or women’s game against Army to clinch the Interservice title.

Both games were played simultaneously, the crowd kept in full suspense as both Navy teams trailed for the first three quarters.

The turning point for Navy men’s came when Australian Under 23 representative MIDN David Jarrett, fresh from the Fiji Challenge Cup, was moved to Goal Attack after half time.

His experience now came to the fore.

“We were definitely put off side at the beginning,” MIDN Jarrett said.

“We were struggling to get points on the board. I tried to change the style of
play and free it up by being more mobile.

Combined with the changes the team made at half time, it made a difference on the score board.”

Inspiring the team, MIDN Jarrett dominated the scoring and brought them back from seven goals down.

He missed only one attempt at goal for the second half.

Meanwhile, on the women’s court excellent contributions by MIDN Tess Clarke and SMN Julie Fairchild also turned the tide as both teams clawed their way to the front.

Navy went on to win the men’s and women’s comps against Army 28-23 and 33-25), giving Navy the 2004 Interservice netball title.
