Navy’s hopes of taking the National squash title were dashed
last month when RAAF asserted their dominance.
The national carnival, held at RAAF Williamtown, attracted 57
entrants from around the country.
Players of all levels were challenged with cold weather and
lots of matches over four days of competition.
The highlight of the weekend was the national interservice competition,
with Navy and Army playing off to compete against the title
holders, RAAF.
Army managed to edge Navy out of contention and in the final,
RAAF retained the title for a third straight year with a comfortable
win over Army.
The Open Mens and Mixed Masters divisions were taken out by
SGT Darryl Bessell (RAAF) in a convincing display of experience,
while the Women’s Open was won by SGT Madonna Doyle (RAAF).
During the weekend there was also some strong challenges for
positions on the up and coming tour of New Zealand.
The touring team was announced at the presentation function
though no Navy players were selected.
The team will tour New Zealand for 16 days in October and play
test matches against the NZAF.
