Brunei accepts Leibbo as one of her own

HMAS Brunei (LCDR Byron Williamson) welcomed a new member to the ship’s company during her visit to Port Douglas during Carnivalle 2004.

Steve Liebmann from the Channel 9 Today Show was welcomed as an honorary member as the ceremony of Colours was broadcast as a lead in to the eight o’clock news.

Brunei was in Port Douglas to participate in the annual Blessing of the Fleet Ceremony.

Steve Liebmann and Today Show were there to cover the finale of the week of festivities for Carnivalle. The Today Show crossed to Liebmann on a number of occasions and he highlighted the important support role of LCHs and Brunei during recent operations in East Timor, Bougainville and the Solomon Islands.

Liebmann also alluded to the ship’s participation in Exercise Croix de Sud with the French Navy followed by the ship’s deployment to the Solomon Islands as part of Operation Anode.

Liebmann was presented with a specially embroidedship’s baseball cap that he proudly displayed to the audience Australia-wide.

The cap had his nickname in true Navy style - LIEBBO embroided across the back.

The visit to Port Douglas by Brunei also cemented the ties between the ship and the local community.

After the participation in the recent Anzac Day ceremonies, the ship’s company was given a warm reception during the parade through Port Douglas ending in a dramatic fireworks display.

Carnivalle ended on Saturday night with a Food and Wine spectacular.
