A
meeting of the interservice surfing team and other serving surfers
interested in joining or supporting the Navy Surfing Association
will be held this month.
The inaugural NSW Interservice Surfing Championship in May highlighted
an extremely talented group of sports men and women serving within
our Navy.
Its also highlighted that the sport had matured and was capable
of becoming organised at a service level and a recognised sport
of the ADF.
In 2001, the Navy Surfing Association (NSA) was formed through
the efforts of WO's Glenn Spilstead and Terry Oxley and attracted
some 60 members.
The club was viable, the mambers became financial an inaugural
competition was held in stormy conditions at Collaroy Beach on
Sydney’s Northern Beaches.
The event was seen as successful by all involved and a follow
up event was planned.
However, the RAN soon became increasingly operational and the
majority of the club’s members were deployed across the planet
and so the NSA was put on ice.
A register of members and the club finances remain active with
the club’s constitution still valid.
Now basking in the glory of success through the inaugural interservice
competition, the NSA is seeking to again become active.
A meeting of all surfers interested in joining or supporting the
NSA will be held Wednesday July 7 adjacent Eloura Beach SLSC,
Cronulla atv 1pm.
The agenda includes discussion on the way the ahead for the NSA,
the forming of a new club committee and if viable, election of
a club president.
It is anticipated the afternoon will conclude with a surf, so
come along and have a say and enjoy your sport among friends.
