Wading into battle
As a chill, grey dawn broke over the English Channel on June 6, 1944, about 300 Australian officers and men in Royal Navy ships and boats were able to take a breather from the last few days’ heaving, violent seas and squalling rain.

Garden Island lights up ...up and away
The Cruiser Wharf at Garden Island in Sydney became a helicopter launch pad with a difference a few days ago. Park Air 2, a Bolko helicopter operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service alighted on the wharf before carrying a restored 90-year-old lighthouse out to Fort Denison, the historic island fort in the centre of Sydney Harbour.

Navy Sea King pilot LEUT Simon Hook found “enough room to swing a cat” the other day. Simon and his crew had been asked by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service to lift a 2.2 tonne Bobcat from the carpark at Palm Beach in Sydney’s north to a grass clearing beside the historic Barrenjoey Lighthouse 100 metres above the sand.
