DSA issues warning on spy card

Are you planning a meeting where sensitive matters will be discussed?

Then don’t let a visitor leave his or her personal items in the room, they could be listening.

The warning comes from the Defence Security Authority (DSA) and follows the discovery in “spy shops” or via the internet, of a variety of covert listening devices. One of them is the “card transmitter” selling for under $300.

The card transmitter measures 85 by 54 by 6 mms, is credit card size but slightly thicker.

It weighs just 30 grams and has a claimed “life” of 50 hours. Its range is at least 200 metres and up to 400 metres if placed near a window.

DSA said the card can be concealed within a folder and could be taken into a sensitive meeting, such as a tender negotiation which could in turn compromise valuable information.

DSA’s central office can be contacted on 6266 2605.
