Bats call for sailors

For all those sailors who need their annual football ‘fix’, the time has come, with competitions of all codes kicking off around the country this month.

For those whose specific interest is Australian Rules football and who are keen to pull on the boots to keep fit, there is an opportunity to play in the local Sydney competition.

SFL first division club, UTS, is currently recruiting players for the 2004 season that commences on Saturday, April 3.

The club runs three senior teams across first and second division plus a women’s team in the SWAFL.

The UTS ‘ Bats’, coached by former Balmain player Roger Moten, play and train at Trumper Park in Paddington. Training is every Tuesday and Thursday night commencing at 6.30 pm.

The Bats, affiliated with the University of Technology Sydney has won two Division Two premierships since being formed in 2000.

It’s playing group comprises mainly expatriates who have played senior level football before relocating to Sydney.

Club president Phil Burfurd said the club was a focal point for AFL supporters in and around the Eastern Suburbs. “With the social facilities we are developing this year and the introduction of a women’s team, the club provides the perfect haven for those sailors looking for their regular footy fix.”

Any sailors interested in joining the UTS Bats’ quest for a 2004 premiership flag or to support socially can contact president, Phil Burfurd on 0414 260 292, recruiting officer, Rod Paech on 0417 890 860 or head coach Roger Moten on 0404 654 853.
