By Gary Booth The fifth Rockingham Mussel Fest was held on March 7, with a significant naval involvement in the day’s activities, attended by thousands of visitors.

LSCK Daniel Flint from HMAS Stirling displayed his culinary skills by whipping up two mussel dishes, which were well received by those lucky to taste them.

Meanwhile, HMAS Darwin’s CPOCK Kevin Cox, was the head judge for the mussel cook-off competition between nine local residents.

This is the second year Kev has been the head judge, and based on his talent with the microphone in announcing the prize winners, it is more than likely Kev will be asked to carry out this most important judging task next year.

A major highlight of the day was the twohour performance by the Western Australian detachment of the RAN Band. As the band went through its repertoire it proved to be a major crowd pleaser.

Following the band’s outstanding performance, the Bandmaster CPO Danny Mulheron fended off approaches from organisers of other events to perform at their activities.

AUSCDTFOUR (LCDR Steven Bliss) provided an interesting display of diving equipment and material.

The three-man team under the leadership of LSCD Bill Taylor spent many hours on Sunday discussing their trade with interested members of the public.

Australian Naval Cadets from TS Anzac displayed their parade ground skills with cadets marching to the cadence of their drum band.

TS Anzac also maintained a display at the festival promoting their activities to the wider Rockingham community.

CO HMAS Stirling CMDR Phil Orchard, was pleased with the efforts made to support this significant event in the Rockingham social calendar, saying to unit CO’s and Managers that despite the foul weather in the afternoon their people did a great job, reflecting well on Navy and HMAS Stirling.
