Aussie Rules set to sizzle

The Aussie Rules action promises to be hot at this year’s national inter-service championships. CPOATA Darren Murray takes a mark at last year’s nationals.

Navy will be looking to break Army’s 17-year hold at next month’s ADF Australian Football National Championships.

To be held at Manuka Oval in Canberra on Friday 16, Sunday 18 and Tuesday April 20, the national inter-service championship carnival promises to offer three full days of high quality Aussie Rules action.

With a history of Army domination in the men’s carnival, the Navy team are keen to take the title, while the women will compete for the first time in the inter-service competition.

The national inter-service championship carnival will not only determine the champion men’s and women’s teams, but also the finest players to represent the ADF in the AFL annual national men’s and women’s competitions.

The games will kick off at 1200h on Friday 16 and Tuesday 20 April. Entry is free for ADF members and their families to these two games.

On Sunday, the loser from the Navy versus Air Force men’s game will play Army as the curtain raiser to the big game, Sydney Swans versus the North Melbourne Kangaroos.

Weather permitting, all games will be played at Manuka Oval, except for the second inter-service women’s game, which will kick-off at Ainslie Oval on Sunday April 18 at 1000h.

The champion men’s and women’s teams will be presented with a trophy by CDF, General Peter Cosgrove following the championship games on Tuesday April 20.

The selected men’s national team will go on to play in the curtain raiser game to the Sydney Swans versus Melbourne Demons match, to be held under the lights at Telstra Stadium in Homebush, Sydney on Saturday April 24.

The ADF team will compete to hold the AFL Services Challenge Cup against the New South Wales combined emergency services team.

So, for high-level Aussie Rules action, the national inter-service championship carnival is an event not to be missed. For further information contact the carnival organiser MAJ Peter Crabbe on (02) 9600 1536 or Australian Services Australian.

Football Association Communications Officer Ms Jo Button, either via e-mail to jo.button@defence.gov.au or by telephone on (02) 6268 8623.
