Patrol
boat HMAS Wollongong, the Kelly Shield winner for 2003, formed
the backdrop for ceremonial Divisions at the Darwin Naval Base
last month.
She was, however, out of the water on the hardstand and undergoing
maintenance.
Close to 200 officers and sailors, resplendent in their “whites”,
formed up for inspection by the Maritime Commander, RADM Raydon
Gates.
RADM Gates addressed the assembly and also presented awards including
handing the Kelly Shield to Wollongong’s ship’s company, led by
LCDR Steve Thompson.
Ship’s companies from seven patrol boats, Geelong (LCDR William
Triffit), Launceston (LCDR Paul Koerber) Wollongong (LCDR Stephen
Thompson), Dubbo (LCDR Richard James), Cessnock (LCDR Richard
Stevenson), Fremantle (LCDR Ainsley Morthorpe) and Warnnambool
(LCDR John Navin) took part in the parade.
Three groups from FIMA/Darwin and another from the Patrol Boat
Group’s Darwin Headquarters also participated.
