Hundreds tested under new program

By Louise Butcher

Several hundred RAN personnel have been randomly tested for alcohol under the Navy’s new Safe Spirit program.

As of March 1, 336 random breath tests have been conducted in ships and establishments as part of Safe Spirit.

Only eleven people tested positive to the influence of alcohol. The implementation phase of the program, rolled out mid-January to all ships and establishments with the exception of ships deployed overseas, has encountered few problems.

Testing has been focused towards safety critical areas deemed to be work environments of heightened risk to Navy personnel, or the public, or where key operational decisions are made.

Safe Spirit aims to provide a safe workplace for all Navy members with regard to alcohol consumption by identifying those people who may have a problem with alcohol and their rehabilitation.

For more information: DI(N) PERS 31-51 (Alcohol Testing) or contact CMDR Keith Donohue (02) 6266 3820.
