The
maxi yacht Nicorette suffered mixed fortunes during Australia’s
bluewater ocean racing season.
She was forced to withdraw from the Sydney to Hobart Yacht Race
on December 28 after sustaining keel and hull damage in Bass Strait.
After limping back to Eden and then making her way back to Sydney,
the crew worked around the clock to re-fit the boat in time to
enter the Pittwater to Coffs Harbour Race.
The redesign of the front rudder (canard) meant that Nicorette
was now significantly faster than she had been over the previous
three months.
Skipper Ludde Ingvall was tired but relieved after taking line
honours in the gruelling Coffs Harbour race. Prior to the start
of the ocean racing season Nicorette received a helping hand from
the ADI Ltd dockside crane and team of ADI workers at Garden Island.
They helped the maxi yacht show off her “high tech” keel. The
racer came alongside the Cruiser Wharf on the island and was gently
lifted clear and put in a cradle for the media to see.
Built in 1999, the new keel was developed to keep the ocean racer
competitive.
