A
model of the Patagonian Toothfish was presented to HMAS Warramunga
(CMDR John VanDyke) during a recent visit by Theo Kailis, Chairman
of Austral Fisheries.
HMAS Warramunga, recently returned from the Southern Ocean where
she arrested the fishing vessel Maya V for alleged illegal fishing
of the Patagonian Toothfish in Australia’s Exclusive Economic
Zone.
Maya V was apprehended around the remote Heard and McDonald
islands, over 4000 kilometres south-west of Perth, on Wednesday,
February 11, 2004.
Mr Kailis, who holds 71 per cent of the quota to fish in Australia’s
EEZ, wanted to thank the ship’s company of HMAS Warramunga for
their efforts in assisting to stamp out the activities of alleged
illegal poachers in Australia’s southern waters.
