HMAS Success completed one of the deepest voyages into Antartic waters ever conducted by an RAN warship when she passed Heard Island in support of HMAS Warramunga’s capture of an alleged illegal fishing trawler.

The Royal Australian Navy’s Eastern Fleet oiler, HMAS Success
(CMDR Mark McIntosh) has returned to Australia after making a 7,000-kilometre dash into the Antarctic to help frigate HMAS Warramunga (CMDR John Vandyke) arrest an alleged toothfish poacher.

It is believed Success made one of the deepest voyages into Antarctic waters ever conducted by a RAN warship.

After meeting up with Warramunga, Success took the “Great Circle” route back to Australia which saw her travel south below Heard Island before looping northwards.

Warramunga scrambled from Western Australia to apprehend the alleged fishing trawler Maya V.

RAN operations knew the frigate would need logistics support to get back from the Southern Ocean, so sent Success from Sydney.

CMDR McIntosh praised his crew.

“The young men and women aboard Success did a great job during extremely difficult weather conditions,” he said.
