Endeavour changes her tune

LCDR Cowan hands the weight, in this case a spyglass, to LCDR Witt onboard Young Endeavour.
LCDR Cowan hands the weight, in this case a spyglass, to LCDR Witt onboard Young Endeavour.

With hands waving and to the song “Crabs and Seashells” the 13 member permanent ship’s company of the sail training ship Young Endeavour said farewell to their commanding officer LCDR John Cowan late last month.

A few minutes earlier, LCDR Cowan had handed the “weight” to LCDR Brenton Witt.

The change of command took place at Forgacs shipyard in Newcastle where Young Endeavour was coming out of a $1.5 million half life refit.

The work involved cleaning and painting of the hull and deck, re-stepping the mainmast, replacing the galley and renovating accommodation for some of the youngsters who sail on the yacht as part of the Young Endeavour charter.

A generator was also overhauled.

After local sea trials the beautiful yacht was expected to take on her first 24 youngsters and sail from Newcastle arriving in Sydney on December 18.

LCDR Cowan who has been the commanding officer for the past 18 months, is joining the staff at HMAS Creswell.
