New facility opens at Harman

By Michael Weaver

Defence’s information super-highway stands to move into top gear with the opening of the Defence Network Operations Centre (DNOC) at HMAS Harman on December 1.

The DNOC is one of several operational organisational components within the Information Services Branch of the Information Systems Division in CSIG.

The $26-million purpose-built facility replaces the smaller and less capable centre at Deakin in the ACT, and will manage all of Defence’s Information Technology and Communications (ICT) networks.

Director General Information Services Brigadier Rob Moffatt said one of the significant advantages of moving to Harman is being able to link with the ICT infrastructure already in place at Harman, such as the existing Defence Information Systems and Communications Establishment ACT, the Naval Communications Area Master Station and the Naval Communications Station.

He said that DNOC will manage all of Defence’s fixed and mobile telecommunications as well as the restricted, secret and top-secret networks.

The DNOC will provide ICT services to Defence staff across Australia but also to Defence staff in many of our embassies and high commissions and also provide vital satellite communications for ADF military operations worldwide.

The DNOC embraces state-of-the-art technology to provide a highly secure and resilient ICT environment that operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, 365 days a year.
