Classic at Kosciusko For the second year in a row, the Navy has won the interservice trophy for cross-country skiing in the classic Kosciusko Tour race.

The result was determined by the aggregate time of each teams’ three competitors. The Navy ‘Guns’ Team of LCDR Garry Lewis, CPO Ralph Loeding and CMDR Martin Linsley triumphed over the other Navy, military and civilian service teams.

Navy has won the interservice Kosciusko Tour trophy 11 times with Army winning it eight times and the RAAF three times. The race started above the village of Thredbo with a two-kilometre climb almost to the summit of Kosciusko.

Then followed a predominantly downhill traverse across to Charlotte’s Pass to finish at Perisher, a total distance of 18km. The race was not without incident with CAPT David Michael breaking a ski during the race and having to withdraw.

Top ADF/Navy times for the Kosciusko Tour were LCDR Garry Lewis with a time of 1hr 8mins 28sec (8th fastest male/3rd in age group) with CPO Ralph Loeding a close second with a time of 1.11.33 (9th fastest male/4th in age group) and CMDR Martin Linsley third with a time of 1.22.03 mins
(16th fastest male/4th in age group).
