In August 2002 Lieutenant Craig King of HMAS Albatross (CAPT Simon Cullen) lost his battle against leukaemia.

The previous year Craig had organised the inaugural HMAS Albatross World’s Greatest “Shave for a Cure” day on the base. “Shave for a Cure” day is aimed at raising funds for the Leukaemia Foundation for use in research.

The activity involves people shaving their heads and or beards and workmates sponsor their efforts.

In accordance with his wishes, as expressed by his wife Dianne, the CO has established the “Lieutenant Craig King Leukaemia Research Fundraising Day.”

It will be held annually and in conjunction with the shave day.

The fundraising day was held earlier this year with great success. On August 26 the base handed a cheque for almost $14,000 to Gabrielle Prest, the support services manager for Leukaemia Foundation NSW.
