LCDR Rod Smith and wife Sue upon his completion of 34 years' service. Rod now plans a career of farming and horse-breeding

LCDR Rod Smith, the Staff Officer Navy Surface Warfare Professional Requirements at NHQ has decided that after 34 years it is time to move to greener pastures and appropriately try his hand as a gentleman farmer.

Rod joined up as a Junior Recruit (JR) back in 1970 at the ripe old age of 17, commencing his life as a Radar Plotter (RP).

For the younger generation that’s pre CSO. Rod served on a number of platforms in a variety of roles from RP through to CSM before making the transition under the WO Entry Scheme as a Lieutenant CSM in 1995.

In reviewing the platforms that Rod has served in, from the aircraft carrier HMAS Melbourne to the frigate HMAS Swan, it is interesting to note that he has outlived them all.

Rod, who is married to Sue, recently celebrated 27 years marriage and intends to settle on his small farm, just outside Bungendore, NSW enjoying life of gardening, landscaping and horse breeding.
