SBLT David Murphy from Geelong has been awarded the RSL Sword as the top graduate in 2003 for the Seaman Officer Application Course.

At a ceremony in HMAS Watson (CAPT Peter Murray) on September 12, the newly elected National President of the RSL, MAJGEN Bill Crews, presented the sword to SBLT Murphy.

The sword was given in recognition of SBLT Murphy’s impressive academic and practical record as well as demonstrating the values of honour, honesty, courage, integrity and loyalty.

“I ask you to treasure the responsibility of being in command of others,” said MAJGEN Crews.

“The families here will feel secure in the abilities of those who graduate today.”

SBLT Murphy who has a brother in the Army and whose grandparents served in the RAF in WWII was also awarded Dux of SEAAC 35A/B and 36D.

The award was made by CDRE Simon Hart, DGNPT, who also presented Navigation Watchkeeping Certificates (NWC) to 25 SEAAC graduates.

“Leadership is learning about the people you are going to lead,” CDRE Hart said.
“I ask that you take up the opportunities available.”

The graduates now join a Major Fleet Unit (MFU) for the final sea phase of their application course leading to their Bridge Watchkeeping Certififcate and PQ as Seaman Officers.

SBLT Murphy has been posted to HMAS Parramatta.
