By CPL Damian Shovell

All ADF participants in adventurous training are invited to forward their submissions to the Inspector General by October 24.
All ADF participants in adventurous training are invited to forward their submissions to the Inspector General by October 24.

Adventurous training in the ADF is under evaluation by the Inspector-General of Defence.

The leaders of the review team, LTCOL Patrick Cullinan and WGCDR Kerry McDonald, I-G’s Group, said the main objective of the evaluation was to determine the contribution of adventurous training to the human preparation of ADF personnel for operations - including combat.

“The evaluation will also determine any associated implications including risk, safety and compensation,” they said.
Permanent, reserve and ex-members are invited to contribute in writing to give their views on adventurous training as an individual, team, unit or association.

Responses should address:

  • What is the nature of your experience with adventurous training in the ADF?
  • Were your expectations met?
  • Is adventurous training important to the ADF?
  • Has adventurous training helped in your development or application of the Defence service values, including; professionalism, loyalty, integrity, courage, innovation, teamwork, leadership, initiative, fairness, honour and honesty?
  • Has your participation in adventurous training in the ADF been of any value to you in other ways?
  • Has your experience with adventurous training highlighted any issues with governance, record keeping, funding, sponsorship, retention, occupational health and safety, risk (to the individual or the organisation), accreditation, compensation, outsourcing, media or legal arrangements? What are these issues?
  • Can you suggest improvements to the policy, process and/or practices of adventurous training in the ADF?
  • Any additional comments are invited.

Details of service (Navy, Army or Air Force), rank, unit, and whether you’re a member of permanent or reserve forces or an ex-member are required.

Your name is optional and responses will not be attributed in the evaluation report without written consent.
(A question template can be e-mailed to you on request.)

The deadline for submissions to the review is October 24.
