CDFGEN
Peter Cosgrove takes time out to pose with fellow attendees
at the NCO Development Forum

Defence
needs people who are well prepared to lead and manage in uncertain
and complex situations.
Improved Leadership and Management at all rank levels are increasingly
in demand in an international and national security context marked
by high levels of complexity and risk.
The Centre for Defence Command, Leadership and Management Studies
hosted CDF GEN Peter Cosgrove when he gave the opening address
for the first NCO Leadership Development Forum at the Australian
Defence College on August 26.
The purpose of the forum was to raise corporate and cross-organisational
awareness of the current extent and nature of Non-Commissioned
Officer Leadership and Management training.
It also provided an opportunity to exchange ideas concerning future
direction.
The increased awareness of the extent of training for NCOs was
facilitated by interesting and informative presentations from
all of the three services.
Presenters from the Service training organisations provided an
opportunity for a discussion of the future direction of NCO training.
The possibility of some joint NCO training was discussed with
a range of opinions being shared. Further consideration of this
issue is needed, given the increasing need for understanding and
working in a joint environment during operations.
Many different perspectives were heard, but there was agreement
that the current training was among the best in the world, and
that Australian NCOs are among the best on operations.
During his opening remarks, CDF acknowledged the superior professionalism
of the Australian NCOs in the coalition force.
A recurring theme throughout the day was the need to retain Single
Service traditions and culture, whilst carefully identifying necessary
changes in training to meet the challenges and complexity of future
warfighting.
