Geelong reunion

Seventy one years of service to the community of Geelong will be encapsulated in an evening of camaraderie and friendship on Saturday October 25.

The Geelong unit of the Australian Navy Cadets will hold a reunion of ex members of the unit in the Vines Road Community Centre, Geelong, from 1800 until 2330 that evening.

Tickets are $5 per head, BYO food & drink. Nibblies supplied.

Any person who has been a member of the Geelong unit of the Navy League of Australia Sea Cadet Corps, the Australian Sea Cadet Corps, the Naval Reserve Cadets or the Australian Navy Cadet Unit known as TS Barwon are invited to apply for tickets now by ringing (03) 5278 4436.

In 1932, Captain Pidgeon, assisted by Paymaster Lieutenant Roy Fidge of the Royal Australian Navy, interviewed prospective members of the first Geelong unit of the Navy League of Australia Sea Cadets.

This was a unit that was to achieve so much and also see so many prominent Geelong citizens proceed through its training program.

After their initial years on the end of Geelong’s old Moorabool Street pier, the unit moved to their present headquarters on the Western Beach. The headquarters was originally a city council garden shed before being used by the Geelong Harbour Trust as a boat shed.

Many changes have taken place over the years, but the quality of the young persons passing through the unit has remained at an incredibly high standard.

All persons wishing to attend, should contact the organiser, Maurice Anderson on telephone (03) 5278 4436.

Lost Lonsdale mates

I have recently discussed with some former fellow officers of the RANR based at HMAS Lonsdale in the 1960s, the possibility of holding a reunion early next year.

Unfortunately we have lost touch with some and were wondering if perhaps they might be on your mailing list, and that you might be able to let us have their addresses.

They are:
LCDR David Trace
LCDR Brian Simpson
LCDR Bruce Carr

If you are unable to help, perhaps you might suggest another means of
getting in touch.

Story call

I am writing a book on the Royal Australian Navy or should I say its people, the sailors, that are the Navy.

What I want to do is write this story in their own words. I would like the sailors from ORs to Officers to tell me their story of their lives in the navy, how it has affected them and their families.

I would like to hear about the places that they have been, the ships they have served in and any funny or sad stories that they can remember. They can tell me on audio tape or write it down or send me an email at
