Tunnels dug beneath Darwin during World War II to hold vitally needed oil, became a training venue for LCDR Andy Schroder and his ship’s company of the patrol boat HMAS Bunbury.

They didn’t even have to switch on the lights. The training was in the use of night vision goggles.

After the Buffer, POBM Tim Oscar gave theoretical instruction on the goggles, the ship’s company moved to the tunnels built near the Stokes Hill Wharf.

All officers and sailors undertook the training as part of their posting pre-requisites, continuation training and preparation for workup and ORE later this year.

Personnel have completed “use of force”, damage control, first aid and gunnery courses in readiness for the workup.

The tunnels are a tourist attraction in Darwin.
