LSATA Stephen Bates receives the McCarthy Shield from the CO 723 SQN, LCDR Allen Whittaker. The perpetual shield recognises outstanding achievement in pursuit of excellence.

In remembrance of the professionalism and outstanding personal attributes of ABATA Brian McCarthy, who died tragically after a rock climbing accident, the 723 Squadron Senior Sailors have dedicated a perpetual shield for outstanding achievement in pursuit of excellence in the maintenance field.

The shield is presented annually to the Junior Sailor considered to be providing the greatest contribution to the Squadron mission and is assessed under the criteria of self-motivation, dedication, team spirit, integrity and forthrightness.

LSATA Stephen Bates has sustained an exceptional work ethic and attitude that has resulted in the Squadron’s major servicing section producing work of a high standard despite numerous disruptions.

This has also been achieved without the guidance and support of a full time maintenance manager.

His self-motivation and dedication to the Squadron maintenance effort has been recognised and widely acknowledged by Squadron Officers and Sailors resulting in LS Bates being awarded the Brian McCarthy Shield in June 2003.
