The
former Submarine Mines Depot at Chowder Bay and the architects
Allen Jack and Cottier, have just received a prestigious award
from the NSW branch of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects.
The site and the company received the Greenway Award for conservation
and re-adaptive use announced on July 19.
The depot was once used by defence personnel whose job it was
to lay mines to defeat an attack by enemy submarines.
Defence has now handed the site over to the Sydney Harbour Federation
Trust.
The jury which awarded the prize wrote, the conservation
works undertaken by the Sydney Harbour Federation Trust with Allen
Jack and Cottier demonstrate sound conservation practice while
balancing the potential future demands of the building with the
usual BCA requirements.
Uncompromising in its approach, the high quality works were
based on a thorough understanding of the deterioration problems
at hand and the buildings heritage significance.
The work is technically proficient and also importantly
enables the quality, integrity and significance of the building
to be revealed and celebrated, the jury wrote.
